Pharmaceutical Biotechnology

Pharmaceutical biotechnology is a field in which the principles of biotechnology are applied to the development of drugs. It contributes in design and delivery of new therapeutic drugs, diagnostic agents for medical tests, and in gene therapy for correcting the medical symptoms of hereditary diseases. Pharmaceutical Biotechnology provides insight into the process of biopharmaceutical drug discovery and impact on the practice of medicine. Pharmaceutical biotechnological research includes the application of recombinant DNA technology, microbiology, genomics, proteomics and industrial biotechnology. Pharmacogenomics analyses how the genetic makeup of an individual affects his/her response to drugs. The acquired and inherited genetic variation on drug response in patients by correlating gene expression or single-nucleotide polymorphisms with pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics can be studied.
